Department of Community Medicine is one of the key teaching departments at Smt. Kashibai Navale Medical College, Narhe, Pune with Rural and Urban Health Training Centre extensions. It plays a vital role in patient care, prevention of disease, administration of medical services and medical education. Department has established itself as an important centre of learning for graduates and post-graduate medical students for providing integrated preventive, promotive and curative health services to the community. It ensures that every student is taught fundamental clinical skills as well patient-centred primary health care to make them competent medical professional.
Since its inception, department had been contributing significantly in the provision of primary health care to the poor and needy through its Urban and Rural Health Centres striving a model of comprehensive health care which will be the Role Model for others and can be replicated elsewhere as well. Department organises various health camps, blood donation camps, health education (IEC) activities, observation of various public health days in rural and urban areas.
Rural Health Training Centre, Kusgaon, Lonavala provides 24 hour emergency services, is well equipped laboratory, established Designated Microscopy Centre (DMC) under Revised National Tuberculosis Programme (RNTCP) for diagnosis of Tuberculosis. In addition weekly specialist visits to RHTC provides specialised health services to rural people.
Urban Health Training Centre located in Kondhwa with its expanded medical manpower and the Nursing and Physiotherapy staff has raised the bar by several notches in providing comprehensive health care to the ever increasing population.
The Department strives to provide the best learning opportunity to medical and paramedical students to understand health needs, environmental sanitation, socio-economic conditions and health problems of the underprivileged section of the community. Department also carries out health promotional activities in the local community through health talk, street play, role play and health awareness rallies.
Department of Community Medicine aims to produce high quality public health experts and community physicians. Department is consistently working towards discovery of new knowledge in the domain of public health, advocacy for application of new ideas in health care of populations and disseminating knowledge by arranging State and National level conferences. The department has been actively involved in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of various National Health Programs. It facilitates designing community based research project, bioethics and advanced statistical analysis.
The Department helps in maintaining a liaison with the Government and other organizations as a matter of policy advocacy and has developed an excellent partnership with the District Health System to provide technical support for training and implementation of community-based programs.
It is a matter of pride and feather in the cap for the Department of Community Medicine that a prestigious 45th National IAPSM & 19th Maharashtra State Joint Conference of IAPSM & IPHA – 2018 was successfully organized by this department from 9th -11th March 2018 with preconference workshop on 8th March 2018. 823 delegates attended the conference.
Total 319 participants from all over India presented their recent research papers at 14 different venues simultaneously during 3 days of conference. Total 44 scientific sessions were conducted, out of which 4 sessions were for National award category and 7 were for state award category. 4 National Award and 5 State Award certificates were distributed during valedictory function on 11th March 2018. It was an academic feast for all participants.
