A well established Microbiology department is contributing in serving the patients with various investigations by using advanced techniques.


Diagnostic Service laboratories:

To diagnose the various infectious diseases, nine diagnostic service laboratories are existing.
• Bacteriology Aerobic & Anaerobic
• Serology
• Virology
• Tuberculosis
• Mycology
• Parasitology
• Research laboratory
• Molecular laboratory

In addition to routine and emergency laboratory services, following services are provided.
• Operation Theater surveillance
• Bacteriological examination of water and food
• Quality control programme
• Maintenance of stock culture
• RNTCP
• Biomedical waste management
• Surveillance of Dengue since 2012

Integrated counseling and testing center (ICTC) for HIV testing is functioning since July 2010 i n association with NACO & MSACS. 29110 patients have been benefited through ICTC center till 31st December 2014

Research & Molecular laboratories in Department of Microbiology

Highly advanced & automated technologies are available for identification of various micro-organisms which helps the early diagnosis of the infectious diseases.
The available equipments are
1. Cx-41 Olympus Phase Contrast, Dark ground and Fluorescent MicroscopeVitek-2 Compact: Highly automated system for bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing producing rapid result within 5-8 hrs.
2. Bact /ALERT 3D 120: Automated Aerobic, Anaerobic, Fungal & Mycobacterial culture system.
3. Hain System: PCR based Molecular Genetic System for detection & identification of M. tuberculosis & 40 mycobacterial species. It detects Multi Drug Resistant TB (MDRTB) within 5-6 hours.
4. Eppendorf PCR Leader Bundle: Licenced PCR machine for research & diagnostic purpose
5. ELISA Reader & Washer
6. Western Blot Shaker
7. Rapid diagnostic test for Malaria

Training –

Department is involved in training the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Medical students, Physiotherapy, Basic B.Sc. nursing and Post Basic B.Sc. nursing students.
Students are trained with following aspects of Microbiology
• Laboratory diagnosis of various bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections
• Sterilization and disinfection procedures used in laboratory and hospitals
• Visits to Central sterilization and supply department.
• Prevention of hospital acquired infections
• Biomedical waste management
• HIV infection, prevention, laboratory diagnosis
• Various animals used for research purpose, its use and care
